The stage is set, the media is absolutely ablaze with excitement, the radio stations and TV cant get enough of it. The streets are filled with billboards adding even more fuel to the fire and twitter is dam near about to explode with the anticipation. #areyougonnabethere #ProudmomentforSAhiphop #Levelstothis #bestdayever. To everybody you meet on the streets starting small conversations with have you got your tickets yet?? But what is all this commotion and fuss about??
Its the 24th September, the FNB stadium is filled to the bleaches with a record 98000 people paying between R550 - R1200 for tickets each. The opening acts are international acts Drake and J.Cole and a host of other local talents. But thats not the sole reason for the palpable energy of excitement in the stadium. That honor belongs to the two headlining acts for the evening. The Doro mega himself AKA and the peoples champion Cassper nyovest. Now i can understand why some people would see this idea as a bunch of B.S because why would someone pay so much money to see 2 of the best local acts (who they can see every other weekend) headline a concert when 2 of the best international actsare on our shores. Well quite simply because we love them more.
For nearly more than a decade now the very best of our local acts have never been able/allowed to headline any huge music festival or concert on our shores when there’s an international act on the same card. On top of that they don’t even get the same lights and sound quality the international act do, in our own country, on our own stages in front of our own people and i’m sorry but thats like offering your guest the master bedroom in your own home along with the a glass of the finest vintage while you sleep in the guest room with a can of coke.
However the winds of change are upon us and the breeze is blowing through the hearts of the hiphop community. When AKA declared that he would no longer give his “master bedroom” to his guest by saying he would not open for another international act again i remember my fist in the air and the voice in my head shouting AMANDLA!!! I thought the whole hiphop community would join the movement and force the corporates that bring the international acts to show OUR local talents more love and privilege’s at these events. But that was it, no one else would make the pledge, AKA instead became the voice/face of arrogance and cockiness because he dared to see himself worthy to be a headline act rather than just another opening one. Now of course im not expecting our artist to headline every music fest/concert with international acts because sometimes these international acts come to our shores as a result of their own world tour But if its a South African Event hosted by South African corporations and payed for with South African money shouldnt we concider the idea of having South African Headliners?
But its like i said before the winds of change are here upon us as with the example of Rick Ross being an opening act for our artists at the annual hiphop festival in durban and with the peoples champ Cassper Nyovest aiming to be the 1st ever local rapper to jam pack and headline the coca-cola dome. All of which are stepping stones on the path which will inevitably end at the FNB stadium with the best of our very best going toe to toe with the best of the very best. Just Imagine.
